Reading an Image

This image is a portrait of Ansel Adams taking a photograph of Yosemite. This is a classic image, taken on a black and white film camera. The image has a high contrast, with the subject being in black, with everything else being highlighted. When you look at this image, you immediately look at the car, it stands out, but with the lines on the car, and the colors, your eyes track up to look at the camera and the subject. The mountain on the left is crowded and slopes down to the subject. This image is focused on the center of the car, and the subject. While the background is still mostly in focus, it is just slightly far out. The car is centered in the image, with the wheels on the bottom border. The platform is right exactly in the middle of the image. Half dome, a iconic landmark is set off to the right, and outlined by the sky and car. In this image, the subject is using a old outdated camera, yet a newish car. I guess this image was taken in the late 40s to early 50s. I think that Ansel Adams (the subject) is trying to preserve the oldness and raw beauty of Yosemite by using an old camera. He is standing on the car showing that he has done this before, by having the platform built on top. He obviously is mobile and travels a lot due to the size and use of a car. Perhaps the photographer wants us to think about time, and whether new technology is always better. Or is old school the way to go.
